Responsibilities of the Interpreter
					
					
						- Facilitate Communication
							
								- Dress for contrast of hands
- Fingerspell clearly
- Clear mouth movements
- Identify changes in speakers, use of media, group distractions
- Familiarize yourself with the topic
- Check appropriate lighting (flashlight) and placement
- For long assignments decide how breaks will be arranged
- Let people now when you are lost, i.e. to technical, etc.
- Let people know when communication breaks down
						
						- Make an informal assessment of the deaf consumer’s mode of communication and language level by talking with the deaf consumer before the scheduled event
- Do not assume more than one role at a time
- If the deaf consumer has speech, ask whether he/she wishes to have you voice for him/her
- Be a cultural broker (help people feel comfortable)
- Follow the RID Code of Ethics

- Match speaker’s mode, spirit, and intent
- Don’t council, advise, or give personal opinions
- Use discretion in accepting assignments
- Request compensation professionally and judiciously
- Behave in an appropriate manner (avoid being distracting)
